Jonathan presented a cultural experience, announced with this email.
I have a very special evening planned for you and as is my wont, I intend to break with the well established rules and protocols that apply to these events and do things my own way.
'Musical Appreciation' was once a popular activity in the 18th and 19th centuries and involved a live performance of usually a classical piece together with a discussion and analysis. You may recall such an event in one of the opening scenes of the period drama "Howards End".
I will be transporting you back to a more civilised time before death by PowerPoint and electronic devices and immersing you in a recreation of a private parlour musical appreciation evening. Fear not, only professional musicians will be involved and my role will be limited to serving drinks and leading the discussion.
The program is:
· 6PM pre-dinner drinks and dinner
· 7PM - 8PM Showtime
· 8PM Discussion and drinks
In keeping with the tone of the evening, I would be grateful if you could wear a jacket.
In attendance: Steve Davis, Julien De Jager, Guy Drummond, Guy Hamilton, Bruce Makin, Wal Mayr, Russell Reichelt, Jonathan Shaw, David Straton
Apologies: Tiff Guilding.
A delicious curry was served.
We were then treated to a performance of a series of classical piano pieces, played by a professional pianist: Sarka Budinska.
Jonathan gave us an instructive lecture about Beethoven's life and how his music fitted into the transition between the Classical and the Romantic era.
